Testimonials – Singers

I have always loved to sing but was not confident about myself or my voice, cannot read music, and would never be able to face an audition. So, I was very unsure about joining a choir until I read about Sing Out Loud.

I plucked up courage to phone Karen who was immediately reassuring, none of that would matter. Sing Out Loud is a community singing group, not a formal choir. There was no pressure or expectation and I would be made welcome – which I truly was.

Everyone is so warm and friendly and I have met some really lovely like-minded people. Every meeting is a gathering of friends who enjoy coming together to sing.

Brian is a talented and inspiring tutor, who, together with Karen, makes learning songs easy and fun while still challenging us and driving us on, to aim for an excellent sound.

Two years on I am so very glad I made that call and became a member of Sing Out Loud. I have grown in confidence, look forward to the weekly rehearsals. I have discovered I get a real buzz from our live performances where we can showcase what we do and what we have worked hard to achieve.

If like I was, you are wondering if Sing Out Loud is right for you, I would say give us a try – you are assured of a very warm and friendly welcome and it just might make as big a difference to your life, as it has to mine. Christine Saunders

I’m in my second year at Colchester Sing Out Loud, being introduced by a friend. I don’t think I have a particularly good voice, so I probably wouldn’t fit into a highbrow choir. But I enjoy singing! So Sing Out Loud’s more relaxed approach suits me well. I have got to know some lovely members, and always return home with uplifted spirits (usually singing one of the songs from that evening that just won’t “get out of my head”). Angelia

(I enjoy) just having a go at trying to sing and improve and of course being with a really nice bunch of people. Jayne

(I enjoy) the informality of the evening – I like being with other people who enjoy singing. Susan W

I enjoy singing with others and harmonising. It is also enjoyable to socialise with the other singers. Rosemary

My sister found the Sing Out Loud website and we initially joined together about 9 years ago. Everyone has always been very welcoming and friendly and we have a sense of community which helps keep us coming back. The fact we have a mix of ages, working and retired, adds to the social mix and encourages more people to keep coming, as does the fact we all (usually), seem to be enjoying ourselves!

It helps that there is no need to be able to read music, and no auditions. I feel that singing together promotes a sense of well-being as well as being good for posture and breathing. Brenda

I have had the most wonderful time since joining Sing Out Loud in September 2017. Really look forward to each weekly session, a great way to spend an evening, very informal and enjoyable. Janice

I was first aware of Sing Out Loud through an informal photograph/article in the “City News”, inviting new members. I enjoy singing, but am not particularly musical or eager to perform, so the informality of the group, and no requirement to audition, had an appeal.

There is no obligation to take part in a performance but these low key occasions can be fun and audience participation with familiar songs is encouraged. Sing Out Loud is sociable and relaxed. The music is mixed and occasional mistakes a cause of amusement rather than a disaster. Linda

I heard Karen talking about Sing Out Loud on the radio in my kitchen (BBC Essex, 2014), and thought I would like to join that group. I have been so glad that I did. I enjoy the friendly atmosphere. Everyone is kind and helpful. Grace

Having sung in a school choir, many years ago I was interested in joining a choir. I noticed an article in “The Essex County Standard” about Sing Out Loud. I immediately felt welcomed within the group and that has continued. There are no demands if a session is missed and it is a pleasure not to have to do the organising. Peter

I enjoy all aspects of Sing Out Loud. It’s a place to meet great people, with a mutual enjoyment of singing in a group. It gives you confidence when you perform for public events. It improves your mental wellbeing and your physical health. It’s great when you see the smiles on peoples’ faces after a good performance, and the feedback you receive makes it all worth the practice. It’s a win:win, all round. Susan Kelly

Relaxed and happy singing with everybody involved, in a close group. Ron

As a little girl I loved singing. Every opportunity I would sing: in the car with my Dad, on my swing, perhaps driving the neighbours mad, although they would comment what a happy little girl, I was because of my singing. Even when my Dad died, although such a very sad occasion I managed to sing a song on my own. In a strange way it helped me through, I am not sure how I did it, but I knew I was doing it for my Dad.

I decided that I wanted to keep going with my singing and it wasn’t long after losing Dad that I saw the small advert in the paper: “Do you enjoy singing? If so, come along.” It was like it was meant to be. I have been with Sing Out Loud for ten years. I have grown in confidence, and Sing Out Loud has given me the opportunity to carry on enjoying the one thing that had always made me happy, and continues to do so. Thank you Karen. Jane
